You Tubed my workplace

After another trip to You Tube's London HQ in St Giles Street it raised a question about work, home and play.

There are crazy things going on in what is essentially an IT company. Retro 50s side boards with cocktail shakers and pineapple ice buckets. Recycled compressed chipboard walls and submarine handles on huge doors.

It all feels very You Tube. You can touch down anywhere. Winged armchair, red leather sofa, utilitarian minimalist stool.

It seems that anyone can come into reception and hang out. Work on the large refectory tables and sip Peyton & Byrne tea. It's very welcoming and empowering.

For our tour Jack took us round a brand new editing suite, available to NGOs to come in and make use of. Filled with everything a budding You Tuber could ever desire, for instance, the amazing green room.

So what is this place? And is there anything happening here that reflects change in the way business is, well, going about business?

Is there such a phrase as You Tubed my workplace? There will be soon. As many organisations face a reduced workforce and the challenge of motivating fewer to do more. The workplace is coming into a new dawn. To help staff be creative, nest, relax, be energised and be the best they can be. It is possible to help teams spread out across a business understand the magic in the overall business. Unite departments and provide openness and equality that fosters togetherness followed by greater enthusiasm and action.

The very way you lay out your space has a direct impact on all those that come and go, sit and think, believe and share. I love my You Tube days, their brand experience is very them. I salute them for embracing a new approach. And hope that many will not copy, but be inspired to go further and do something new, daring and appropriate for their business.
